Knives (#2, The Kid series)

a pocket knife on a jungle floor

[Read Part 1]

Ricky pedalled fast. His heart raced as he imagined what he would do to the nerd.

Must be glued to some book. Fucking idiot, he thought as his rusty bicycle took him along the old and forgotten road. He pedalled faster. Adrenaline rushed through his veins and he could feel it. His heart beat faster and the trees surrounding him turned into a brown and green blur.

The branch came out of nowhere. Ricky’s fingers went automatically for the brakes, but the bicycle went straight into the branch. He didn’t even get a chance to realize that the brakes were cut. The front wheel jerked sideways and the bicycle toppled forward. Ricky was thrown forwards and he slid across the rough tarmac and landed a couple of feet further ahead. His bicycle crashed into some trees on the side of the road. He lay there for a few seconds, gasping, and facing skywards. His head hurt but his chin hurt more. He could feel something drip down from his chin and flow across his cheeks. He wanted to wipe it off but his arms ached. He tried getting up but his legs were planted to the ground. He closed his eyes and let out a deep breath. He pushed up against the road with his bruised arms and lifted his upper body up from above the road. He gave off a grunt as he did so. Once he was upright, atleast the upper half of his body, he wiped the blood off of his chin with the back of his hand.

The kick from behind came as he stared at the red streaks on his hand.

Ricky stumbled forward and his instincts kicked in. It’s an ambush.

‘I saw you’, the voice behind him said. It was a familiar voice.

Ricky turned his head around and stared up at Jon, the school bully, younger than him by two years, but his classmate at school. He was also much bigger.

‘Wha-, what?’, Ricky mumbled and crawled away from the person looming over him.

‘I saw what you did to that cat you fucking psycho’, said Jon as he walked forward.

The second kick landed right on Ricky’s abdomen. He winced with pain and clutched the side of his stomach.

‘No, please…’

‘Wait till the whole school hears about this, or maybe the police’, Jon smirked as he said this.

Alarm bells started ringing inside Ricky’s head. He wanted to run but the adrenaline in his veins and the pain in his legs told him to fight. In one quick move, he reached for his foot, grabbed something out of his socks, and swung it around towards the teenager behind him.

Jon saw a glimpse of silver fly towards him but it was too late. He screamed as the knife tore through his calf and he fell backwards. Birds flew overhead and the sun glared down at him. By now Ricky was back on his feet. It was not hurting anymore. He was not hurting anymore. Something turned on inside him. Something dark. Something even darker than how he felt while burning kittens and butchering dogs. He walked towards the crying body of Jon. Blood poured out from his legs and tears poured out from his eyes. Ricky bent down on his knees on Jon’s side.

Something inside Ricky told him to stop but that voice of reason was immediately gobbled up by the darkness.

She’s dead cause of you, the voice of his father screamed at him from inside his head.

He raised the knife above Jon’s face.

Jon saw the silver through his tears.

‘Please, no, I won’t – ’

The knife pierced through his neck and the rest of what Jon wanted to say came out as a gurgle. Ricky pulled out the knife and stood up. He looked down at the twitching body under him. Blood seeped out from it’s neck and mouth. The tarmac around the body’s head darkened and glimmered in the sun. He kept on watching. Blood dripped down from the knife clutched tightly inside his hand.

He always enjoyed this part – the part where you can hear the whining tone down, see the twitching lessen and watch the life go out. Now, he enjoyed it even more.
